Sometimes life changes, and keeping a pet is no longer possible. Rehoming is not giving up—it’s doing what’s best for your pet. At LOHS, we’re here to help.

We offer two options for pet owners looking to rehome their animals:

Owner Surrender – Apply to bring your pet into our shelter.
Courtesy Listing – Share your pet on our website so adopters can contact you directly.

Apply for Owner Surrender

If you live in our service area (Greene, Putnam, Baldwin, or Hancock county) — you may apply to surrender your pet to LOHS. Submitting an application starts the process and opens a conversation about how we can support you and your pet.

Each application is carefully reviewed by our team.
We review each case based on shelter space, resources, and your pet’s needs.
While we cannot guarantee admission, we will do our best to help and may offer referrals or other assistance.

Surrender Fees:

Unaltered Dog: $150.00
Unaltered Cat: $60.00
Altered Dog: $75.00
Altered Cat: $40.00
Additional Dog Surrender: $25.00
Additional Cat Surrender: $25.00

Submit for a Courtesy Listing

If we are unable to admit your pet, or if you prefer another option, you may request a courtesy listing.

You provide us with details and photos of your pet.
We post the listing on our website to share with our adoption community.
Interested adopters will reach out to you directly.

Courtesy listings are a powerful way to connect your pet with potential adopters while your pet remains in your care until adoption.

We understand how difficult it can be to let go of a beloved pet. Please know that surrendering does not mean giving up—it means putting your pet’s wellbeing first. Our team will treat you with compassion and respect while helping your animal find a new home.
